Fire fighters tackle blaze in underpass of University Metro station in Sunderland

Crews have extinguished a fire near to the University Metro station and the area remains cordoned off to the public.

Shortly after 8.50pm on Monday, January 20, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a fire near to the University Metro station in Sunderland.

Crews and a targeted response vehicle from Sunderland Central Fire Station were sent to the scene where the blaze was located in the underpass between the Metro station and Victoria Court.

Fire fighters worked to extinguish the fire which was officially put out by around 9.10pm.

At around 9.30pm, a spokeswoman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service told the Echo: “A fire engine remains at the scene and both sides have been taped off.”

The cause of the fire is currently unknown. No other emergency services were reported to have attended the incident.
