Emergency services were called shortly before 11pm on Sunday, March 7, where officers were able to bring the man to safety and into the care of mental health professionals.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 11pm yesterday (Sunday) we received a report of concern for the welfare of a male in the Durham Road area of Sunderland.

The road was cordoned off to traffic while emergency services attended.
