Emergency services were called to Sunderland’s Wearmouth Bridge today after concern for a person on the wrong side of the railings.

An HM Coastguard spokeswoman said: “We were notified by police at 16.40 this afternoon. There was a despondent person on the wrong side of the railings.

"The Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, the inshore lifeboat, Northumbria Police and the North East Ambulance Service attended.

"The person was taken into the care of the police.”
