Eight-year-old Amari Leonard, from Boldon Colliery, underwent the haircut on Saturday, May 15, with the intention of donating her hair to the Little Princess Trust – a children’s cancer charity that provides real-hair wigs, free of charge, to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

As well as donating her hair, Amari has raised over £700 with an online fundraiser for the charity, who receive no formal funding.

Her mum, Fhiza Leonard, has told the Gazette that Amari came up with the idea herself and how she felt when her daugther was receiving the haircut.

“She said that she wanted to do something, so we researched into what the Little Princess Trust does and found that it costs around £500 for them to make just one wig so we also decided to run a Just Giving page to go along with the cut.

"It was quite emotional to see her having her hair cut, she is well known for having really long hair and she always gets compliments on it.

"She has always been growing her hair and has never had it cut, so to lose 29 inches is quite a lot.”

The mum-of-two also spoke of her surprise at the amount of money that they have managed to raise so far and that Amari’s hair looks set to create two wigs, rather than one.

She added: “I’m really proud of her for doing it and I’m also surprised at the amount of money that we have managed to raise so far.

"We thought we’d only raise around £100 with donations from close family but it is still continuing to rise.

"I can't thank everyone enough for all the support that we’ve had and the Little Princess Trust think that they will be able to make two wigs out of the hair.”
