Echo readers back calls for another Bank Holiday in the UK

Sunderland Echo readers have onverwhelmingly backed the idea of a new Bank Holiday for the UK.

More than 2,700 people voted on our Facebook page, with 72 per cent supporting the proposals and just 28 per cent rejecting it.

Jan Scott was all in favour: “I think there should be a bank holiday every Monday,” she joked.

Gary Devlin favoured swapping around the existing Bank Holiday allocation: “Scrap Good Friday cause nobody gives a dam these days and give us workers 2nd of January of so we can go out on New Year’s Day,” he said.

Niall Hall agreed: “We would be better moving one from May to the summer months - July maybe. We have Easter then two in May and then nothing when the weather is better until the end of August,” he said.

Susan Pike liked the idea of a day off for Brexit: “We could have an Independence Day after leaving the EU,” she said, “but I think sometime between August bank holiday and Christmas would benefit workers the most.”

Dorothy Williamson thought more could be done to improve the existing situation for workers: ”I would like to see Sunday going back to a day of rest. With reduced licensing hours, no football etc and everyone spending time with family,” she said.

“It would mean we didn't need more bank holidays.”
