Driver killed in second fatal Washington crash is named by police

A 40-year-old man who died following a crash on the Havannah Roundabout has been named by police.

Andrew Lakey, of Pelaw, died following a one-vehicle collision on Sunday morning (October 4) after the car he was driving lost control and collided with street furniture.

Emergency services were called to the crash on the Havannah Roundabout at the junction of the southbound A194M slip road and the A182 Washington Highway at 9.50am.

It is believed a Renault Scenic was travelling southbound taking the A194M slip road when, for reasons yet to be established, it has lost control and collided with street furniture.

Emergency services attended and sadly Mr Lakey, who was the only occupant of the car, was found deceased at the scene.

His family are being supported by specialist officers at this time.

An investigation is being carried to help determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Sergeant Steve Armstrong, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said: “This is a devastating time for Andrew’s family and our thoughts go out to them following this awful incident.

“We are continuing to carry out a range of enquiries to build a clearer picture as to the circumstances surrounding the collision that sadly led to Andrew’s death.

“We continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward to assist our investigation – this was a busy section of road at that time of day and we’d urge anyone in the area to check their dashcam footage and come forward.

“If you saw a Renault Scenic on Sunday morning in the area where the collision occurred, we want to hear from you.”

The devastating crash was the second fatal collision in less than 12 hours at the weekend.

A 27-year-old woman sadly died in the collision and three others – two men, aged 35 and 33, and a 26-year-old woman – are in a critical condition in hospital.

The two incidents are not linked.
