Driver in fatal Washington crash to be interviewed, inquest into woman's death hears

Lois Davidson, of Gateshead, was a passenger in a silver Audi S3 heading westbound when it left the A194 and collided with a tree shortly after 10.30pm on Saturday, October 3, last year.

At the time of the tragedy, Northumbria Police said the 27-year-old had been pronounced dead at the scene, which was between the A195 at Follingsby and the A182 Havannah Interchange.

A 35-year-old man who had been driving and 26-year-old woman were left in a critical condition in Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, while a 33-year-old man who had been a passenger was taken to the same hospital and later discharged.

At a short pre-inquest review hearing, held at Sunderland Coroner’s Court on Tuesday, June 22, assistant senior coroner Karin Welsh explained the case had been adjourned to allow for the police investigation to take place.

She said: “Progress has been hampered by the recovery of the driver involved in Lois death from his own physical injuries.

"I understand from Northumbria Police that that person is now fit to be interviewed and it is thought that will take place shortly.

"The police are also awaiting the outcome of some computer download from the vehicle which will then need to be analysed."

The inquest has been adjourned until the morning of Thursday, September 23 for an administrative review.

Northumbria Police has confirmed inquiries are ongoing into Lois’ death.
