Dolphins spotted enjoying bank holiday sunshine near Roker Pier

As families basked in the glorious sunshine at the Sunderland coast on Bank Holiday Monday, some were lucky enough to spot some visitors to the city out on the water.

Donna Louise Hodgson and Ian Maggiore were among those who captured dolphins in videos and photographs, swimming near to Roker Pier on Monday.

Footage, sent to the Echo by Donna, shows the creatures leaping from the water while in Ian’s photograph you can just see a dolphin’s fin popping out of the water.

The latest sighting follows a spate of other pictures and footage showing dolphins in Sunderland harbour and three orcas off the Seaham coast.

According to the RSPB, between 25 and 30 species of dolphin and whale can be seen in UK waters.

They like to take advantage of the quantity of fish and clean waters on parts of the coast, and are most often spotted in the warmer weather and summer months.
