Brothers inspired by Captain Tom Moore raise over £500 for NHS with 100km running challenge

Matt Crowther 12, and his brother Joseph 9, from Chester Le Street, came up with the challenge to raise money for the NHS after being blown away by their hard work during the coronavirus crisis, and to thank them for recently saving their Nana from cancer.

The pair are both keen football fans, with Joseph representing Washington Athletic Football Club during the challenge and Matt representing Hetton Juniors football club.

Throughout May, the brothers kept up with the challenge every day and shared their runs so supporters could keep up with their progress.

Speaking about what made them want to do the challenge, they said: “Our Nana was very poorly and had cancer but the NHS were excellent and our Nana is better now.

The NHS have also been amazing to help all of the people who are poorly with COVID so although not on the same scale as Captain Tom Moore we have helped a little.

In total, Matt and Joseph raised £525 for the NHS and their Mam, Louise, was delighted with the work they had done.

She added: “I am so proud of them both.They both train so hard anyway most days for their football so this has been in addition to that and I have loved being out running with them.”

Overall, in May Matt and Joseph ran an impressive 126.52km and they are still taking donations to the NHS on their Just Giving page.
