From a major new visitor attraction to new housing, bars and the game-changing TV and film studios, here’s a round up of some of the big developments heading our way.

5. RIO, Low Row
There's been numerous delays over the much-anticipated opening of a RIO steakhouse in the city, including relocating the proposed site from the old Frankie & Benny's to the former Halo in Low Row. As of autumn 2024, the owners of the popular steakhouse said they were waiting for roofing repairs to take place before starting a fit out - so fingers crossed for a 2025 opening. | Sunderland Echo

6. West Park Quarter, old Civic Centre site
A housing development set to help boost the city centre is really taking shape. The site of the former Civic Centre will now be a new community for the city called West Park Quarter, with 265 new homes. The first of the homes are already for sale, under the Linden Homes brand, with prices starting from £259, 995 - £299,995. Residents will start to move in in 2025. | Sunderland Echo

7. The Muddler, Keel Square
The signage has been up for some time at corner unit in Keel Square and 2025 should see the opening of The Muddler. The Asian-inspired restaurant is owned by The Danieli Group, who already know the Sunderland market thanks to their Stack brand, which has a successful branch at Seaburn - and they've been busy with a number of Stack openings across the country. Sunderland can look forward to a sushi bar, Asian small plates and colourful cocktails. | Sunderland Echo

8. Maker & Faber, city centre
They've been steadily rising into the city skyline - and 2025 should see the opening of Maker & Faber on the old Vaux site. The two next generation office blocks are all-electric and low energy and are aimed at housing a community of workers, who can take advantage of wellbeing spaces, as part of the overall aim to have more people working and living in the city centre. | Submitted
