If you’re looking for some inspiration for what to do, we’ve rounded up some ideas in and around Sunderland.
5. Visit a beer garden
Pub beer gardens are back open for business across the city and there's a number with cover to protect you from any Bank Holiday drizzle, including Beach Box at The Palm, Stackyard in West Herrington, Victoria Gardens in Grangetown and The Saltgrass in Deptford. Photo: JPI Media
6. Take a walk around the park
Sunderland has many parks to explore, including Doxford Park. Originally a garden for the home of shipbuilder Charles Doxford, Doxford Hall and its grounds were bequeathed to the city in the late 1960s. Friends of Doxford Park do a great job of promoting the park and before lockdown were running a crowdfunding campaign to enhance the city's only walled garden. Known as the 'Secret Garden', it's housed within the park. Photo: JPI Media
7. Check out the Wearside Sculpture Trail
Follow the Wearside Sculpture Trail which follows the north side of the Wear between Roker and Wearmouth Bridge. Highlights include The Red House. Made from red sandstone, reclaimed from the old Queen Alexandra Bridge, it depicts the ruin of a house complete with various pieces of furniture, clothing and personal effects. The Red House was carved on site by Colin Wilbourn and Karl Fisher. Photo: JPI Media
8. Take a walk up Tunstall Hills
For some of the best panoramic views of the city up to Cleadon Hills and beyond, take the short hike up Tunstall Hills. It's also a nature reserve and home to many butterflies which you'll enjoy spotting on your walk. Photo: Katy Wheeler
