Here, we take a look at some of the richest people with ties to Wearside, according to their estimated fortune on Celebrity Net Worth.

5. Alex Kapranos
The Franz Ferdinand frontman was born in Gloucestershire but the family moved to Sunderland when he was just a couple of months old and he spent the next seven years in the city. He has remained a passionate supporter of the North East music scene and Franz Ferdinand were among the first acts to support Sunderland's Pop Recs, playing an intimate gig in 2014, at its first home in Fawcett Street. 6. Roy Keane
Sunderland shocked the footballing world when they unveiled the taciturn Irishman as their new manager in 2006 - but it turned out to be a masterstroke, with Keane taking the side from second bottom of the Championship to promotion as champions. Appointed by Niall Quinn, when his Irish teammate handed the club on to Ellis Short, he did not hit it off with the new boss. Keane's hugely successful playing career with Manchester United and Celtic, as well as his high-profile work as a TV pundit, sees him valued at an estimated £50million. Photo: TY

7. Bryan Ferry
The former Washington Grammar School pupil formed Roxy Music with art school classmate Graham Simpson in 1970 and the band went onto become one of the most influential acts of the first half of the decade. He also enjoyed a hugely successful solo career and is estimated to be worth around £40million. Photo: Kevin Winter

8. Emili Sande
The multiaward-winning singer/songwriter was born in Sunderland and though she grew up in Scotland, remains proud of her Wearside roots. So much so, in fact, that in 2019, she was appointed as Chancellor of the University of Sunderland - the place her parents first met when it was still a polytechnic. Emili, whose debut album, Our Version of Events, spent 10 weeks at number one, is also a keen supporter of the Foundation of Light and was one of the first acts to perform at Sunderland Fire Station.
