The 72-year-old crime writer was an ambassador for her town, campaigning to keep its services running and supporting its community groups, with her passion for literature and reading spread across Sunderland and beyond.
People clapped in celebration of the grandmother as she passed by, with piper playing Amazing Grace as the car pulled up outside St Michael’s and All Angels Church in the Broadway.
