Pensioner taken to hospital after three-car crash in Washington

A pensioner was taken to hospital after being cut free from his car by firefighters.

The crash happened at 1.52pm today on the A1231 and involved an Audi A4, a Nissan Qashqai and a Volkswagen Golf.

Firefighters attended at 2.03pm and used cutting equipment to free the Nissan driver, a 71-year-old man, free from the car.

He was placed on a stretcher and taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary with suspected back and chest injuries.

The drivers of the Audi and VW were both rescued before firefighters arrived and were not injured.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “Police were called to a three vehicle collision at 1.52pm today, eastbound on the A1231 Sunderland highway in Washington, just after the A195 turn-off.”
