A part of our city's history

As the former Director of the Tyne and Wear County Museum Service, I would like to add my voice to the campaign to save Monkwearmouth Station Museum for the people of Sunderland and for its many other visitors from far and wide.

In my time as director, I was very proud that this unique museum won the “Museum of the Year” award in 1973, an immense achievement for a local Museum.

Built in 1848 by George Hudson, this outstanding classical building was sympathetically restored by Sunderland Council so that many of the original features of the station were kept.

I was delighted that the Museum received a very substantial grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2007 which allowed it to be modernised and new displays and facilities installed.

Trains still pass through the station and can be safely viewed from the original platform – a great bonus for visiting children.

It would be very sad if this unique piece of Sunderland’s history was allowed to close down.
