'˜Outstanding' medical practice nominated for Sunderland Echo Health Awards

A medical practice with more than 7,000 patients has been praised as '¨'absolutely outstanding' after being nominated for an award.

The Herrington Medical Centre has received a number of nominations for the Sunderland Echo 
Health awards - with patients applauding the 
caring nature and the way staff always have the 
people they serve in 
their hearts.

Dr Keith Birrell is the GP senior partner and GP trainer at the centre in Philadelphia Lane in Houghton.

He said: “We are 
really happy.

“It is a big 
compliment particularly with it being a patient who nominated us.

“We are delighted that the patients appear to have recognised us, for the second year running.”

Practice manager Lorraine Corkain said the centre had five doctors, 
two registrars and a career start GP (someone who was recruited to begin their working career at the practice.)

Herrington Medical 
Centre also has a four-strong nursing team, 
and a ten-strong reception and administration 
team.

The practice is also a teaching and training base and, among the nominations, one said: “Deserves to win this award more than any others! Absolutely outstanding GP surgery.”

Another nomination said: “Amazing GP practice who always have their patients and staff at heart. Couldn’t 
find a more caring GP practice.”

The Sunderland Echo Health awards aim is to 
make this year’s competition bigger and better than ever before. But to do

This year, the competition is being held in association with City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, with NHS Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group as partner sponsors and Olivers Dental Studio as category sponsors.

The best contenders will make it to our grand finals at the Stadium of Light in 
Sunderland on April 14. Before then, you can nominate up to the deadline of March 31.
