COMMENT: Sunderland in market for a fresh start

Few will shed a tear should the bulldozers move in to pull down the old Park Lane Market.

It may once have been part of the bustling heart of the city, but these days it is considered by many as an embarrassment.

A number of readers have already made their feelings known on social media.

There have been efforts made to revitalise this market, but while it’s had its moments there have been no long-term solutions.

And that’s what is needed here.

The planning application put forward by Sunderland City Council states in no uncertain terms the reason behind the move.

It reads: “The buildings have exceeded their useful economic lifespan and are now redundant.

“Demolition (would) be on the grounds of economy, health and safety and to prevent antisocial behaviour.”

The area needs a boost in the current economic climate that is for sure and what people want to see is a clear plan for the way ahead.

Every part of the city needs to be playing a part in the social or economic wellbeing of our community. Demolition is a means to an end, not a solution.

A council spokesman tells us: “The city council is continuing its works on improving all of Sunderland in line with the City Plan for a more dynamic, healthy and vibrant city, and this includes encouraging new development opportunities. Clearing the former Park Lane Market will help progress and encourage new uses for the site.”

We await the developments with interest.

If progress isn’t made, the Sunderland public will have something to say. And it won’t be pleasant.
