COMMENT: Fitting farewell for remarkable son of Sunderland
In these far-from normal times, the public display of affection shown for the travel industry giant was nothing short of incredible. Incredible and fully deserved.
Despite the limitations placed on people due to the pandemic, hundreds lined the streets of Sunderland as the funeral procession made its way through the city.

Hide AdPerhaps the most poignant moment was when the funeral cars passed the Hays Travel offices.
There the staff members stood, holding blue and orange balloons and bunting to applaud their company’s founder.
The previous evening, landmarks across the city were lit up in the company colours of blue and orange to mark the passing of this remarkable man.
That he did so much for the city is not forgotten, and it’s clear his legacy will live on.

Hide AdThe Hays Travel Foundation, set up to help young people achieve and be the best that they can be in their health, sport, the arts and education, has already seen donations top £23,000.
His family have been overwhelmed by the response and public support.
They said: "We are overwhelmed by the thousands of wonderful tributes, offers of support and messages full of love that we have had. They have truly helped us all through these last few days. He would have been honoured and very proud.”
A remarkable send off for a remarkable son of Sunderland.
