'Absolutely a death trap' - Readers have their say on impact of smart motorways on drivers

Britain's so-called smart motorways have been branded a "death trap" by MPs in a report which has prompted criticism of Highways England.

We asked in our Facebook poll: “Do you feel relaxed and safe driving on a smart motorway?”

More than 600 readers took park in the online vote with 79% voting no.

Michael Badger Mcallister said: “Absolutely a death trap, people are more bothered about what speed they are going at each speed camera interval than what’s in front of them, when they reduce the speed limit due to nothing at all further down the road.”

Peter Cresswell said: “Reading some of these replies where people don't see the problem with 'smart' motorways makes me wonder if they've ever actually seen one, never mind driven on one - especially at night or in the rain!”

Clive Ketley said: “On a regular motorway you know the limit and watch the traffic around you.

“On a smart motorway you are obsessed by looking for speed sign changes and keep hiring the brakes when you go under them for speed cameras weather you are speeding or not.

“I also see restricted speed limits when there is no obstruction or cars broken down on the hard shoulder when it is open as a traffic lane.

“We can’t cope with changing scenarios, pick one thing and stick to it.”
