One person taken to hospital after two-car rush hour crash

One person was taken to hospital after a collision led police to close of a section of a busy road.

The crash happened at 7.25am today, Wednesday, October 28, on the B1284 near Rainton Meadows Arena at Rainton Bridge in Houghton, near to the junction with Mercantile Road.

The North East Ambulance Service sent a double-crewed ambulance to the scene and took one person to Sunderland Royal Hospital.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “At 7.25am we received a call of a two vehicle collision near Cygnet Way near to the Rainton Meadows Arena.

"Officers attended the scene but the road remained open and there was no significant congestion in the area.

"Nobody is believed to have been seriously injured and the road has since been cleared.”

North East Traffic Live tweeted to warn drivers of the incident and said the road was partially blocked while the emergency services dealt with the incident and helped clear the scene.
