Nuclear weapons 'put on trial' at Sunderland meeting

Campaigners will put Trident 'on trial' this week as they discuss the future of Britain's nuclear weapons system.

Trident on Trial: Do We Need Nukes? is the subject of a meeting at Sunderland Minster.

Parliament is due to vote this year on whether to spend more than £100billion on replacing Trident with a new nuclear weapons system.

Event organiser Mark Tyers, of Sunderland People’s Assembly, said: “The Government could quite easily fund the existing junior doctors contract and meet the funding needs of the NHS if it simply axed Trident.”

Dr Geoff Walker and Green Party candidate Rachel Featherstone will speak at the meeting.

Trident on Trial: Do We Need Nukes? will begin at 7pm on Friday at Sunderland Minster, and will feature talks and a question and answer session.

The event is being supported by the Campaign For Nuclear Disarmament (CND), The People’s Assembly and Stop the War Coalition.

The assembly is hosting the event is also putting on a coach to the Stop Trident national demonstration on Saturday, February 27.
