A pensioner with lung cancer has launched his own charity market stall to say thanks for the precious help he's received.

Roger Morrison, 66, has to take a tablet a day as he continues his battle with the illness.

But it has not deterred him from running a market stall, filled with goods donated by family, friends and businesses in the Washington area.

Every day at 8.30am, he opens up the charity stall at the Market Village within the Galleries shopping centre in Washington.

And he stays there until around 2.30pm when, he admits, he needs to rest because of his illness.

He said: “I am still not well. I am slowly improving but I get out and my friends lift my morale.

“Raising this money is not just helping me. It is helping millions of people out there and I am just a little piece of the jigsaw.”

It was only in April that the Glebe resident was first given his diagnosis. Since then, the Washington dad has faced chemotherapy as well as having to take tablets every day.

But now, all he wants to do is say thank you to Macmillan Cancer Support for all their help.

Market Village Centre Manager Karen Carr - who has provided the stall for free for as long as there is vacant space - said: “It is an absolute privilege to be able to help him. He is an inspiration.”

Under the banner “Beat Cancer!” Mr Morrison is selling goods with all proceeds going to the charity. He stocks everything from jigsaws to clothes, and dolls to books.

The retired painter and decorator said: “It is my way of saying thank you to all of the people who have helped me.

“I’m selling jumpers, cameras, Christmas stuff. I have had people coming from all over to see me.

“One woman came in and said ‘what you are doing is amazing’

“I have got lung cancer but I have got a determination to do something and I want to keep going until after Christmas.”

Mr Morrison would love to hear from anyone willing to donate more goods for his stall.
