Northern League: Shildon clinch league and cup double

The Railwaymen were established as champions a couple of weeks ago and faced runners-up Marske United at Norton and Stockton Ancients ground in the Final of the Cameron Brewery Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup.

Following a nail-biting 120 minutes which ended 1-1, Shildon lifted the trophy, winning the penalty shoot-out 3-2.

Jamie Owens pounced when an effort from Adam Preston rebounded from the post, but, right on the stroke of half time, Sam Hodgson fired in Shildon’s equaliser.

Washington completed a successful first season in the top flight but went down 4-2 to North Shields who are in with a good chance of ending in the top six.

A Jack Devlin hat-trick and one goal by Dean Holmes had the Mechanics on the back foot for much of the game.

Mark Davison did reduce a two-goal deficit but the Robins then went 4-1 up before Davison scored again with virtually the last effort of the game.

Wembley-bound Morpeth Town completed the league programme, defeating Guisborough Town in a top-four clash. Paul Robinson and Lee McAndrew were the marksmen.

Malcolm Morien became Dunston UTS’s all-time Northern League top scorer with 27 goals when he cancelled out John Campbell’s opener for Newton Aycliffe.

Morien took the long-standing record created by Graeme Armstrong who now plays for Darlington 1883.
