Adam Burnicle tapped home on 52 minutes, and he was then brought down in the box three minutes later, with Craig Ruddy converting the resulting penalty.

On the hour mark, Burnicle cut in from the right and scored from 15 yards, giving goalkeeper Jonny Ball no chance.

But then Ryhope produced an amazing twist when three goals in three minutes won them all three points.

Logan Powell made it 3-2 after 82 minutes before, a minute later, James Ellis fired the ball home from 20 yards for an excellent equaliser.

Sixty seconds later, a right-wing cross was met by Ellis, at the far post to clinch an unlikely 4-3 win.

Second-top South Shields had a comprehensive 6-2 win at lowly Washington, who attracted their biggest crowd of the season, 381.

David Foley put the Mariners ahead after seven minutes, when he scored from close range, and he then supplied Carl Finnigan to make it 2-0 on 14 minutes.

Just before half-time, Michael Richardson fired home low and hard, giving goalkeeper Daniel Gladstone no chance, to extend the lead.

Foley scored from close range on 75 minutes and completed his hat-trick four minutes later, when he took the ball round keeper Gladstone and slotted home.

Charlie Raby pulled one back after 81 minutes, but Foley restored the five-goal advantage when he scored his fourth of the game, smashing home from 18 yards.

Matthew Waters pulled another goal back for Washington to make it 6-2 with three minutes left.

Seaham Red Star enjoyed a narrow 2-1 home win over visitors Dunston UTS.

Red Star goalkeeper Shaun Newbrook brought down Scott Heslop in the penalty area in just the sixth minute and Heslop got up to put Dunston ahead from the penalty spot.

Luke Proctor made it 1-1 right on half-time. A cross from the right found the ex-Sunderland RCA man unmarked in the box and he fired right-footed past goalkeeper Stefan Holden.

Red Star got the winner 13 minutes from time when Lee Hetherington was tripped in the box by Daryll Hall and former Sunderland forward Craig Lynch converted the penalty with aplomb.

Chester-le-Street remain bottom after they were battered 8-1 by ruthless visitors Morpeth Town.

Morpeth went 3-0 up in the first quarter of an hour, with Mark Davison netting twice. First, he headed home past keeper Jack Wilson from a corner and then he drove home an effort from just inside the box. Ben Sayer made it 3-0.

Liam Henderson then helped himself to two goals either side of half time, to make it 5-0 to the visitors.

Chester scored a consolation goal in the 70th minute, when Jack Honour headed home following a corner, but further goals from substitute Paul Robinson, Sean Taylor and Michael Hall completed title-chasing Morpeth’s rout.

North Shields lead on 67 points, five ahead of South Shields, who have a game in hand. Morpeth, with three more matches to play, are nine points further back.
