Northern League: Consett up to fifth with victory in final game

Consett gave themselves a chance of a top-six Ebac Northern League First Division finish with last night's 3-0 stroll at Whitley Bay.

It was a typical end-of-season match which only came to life a minute before the hour mark. Nathan Steel’s looping header fired the Steelmen in front and further goals quickly followed from Jordan Lavery, with a low drive, and Lewis Gibbons, who produced a neat, close-range finish.

Consett are fifth but could be overtaken by Newton Aycliffe, behind on goal difference ahead of their final game at Dunston UTS tonight, and North Shields, who have two games left and are five points behind.

North Shields visit Washington tonight and host relegated Durham City on Friday.
