North-South divide still evident

What a sad couple of weeks it's been in Sunderland recently. First that poor lady fatally stabbed while working late at night in a shop over Seaburn.

Then the young lady mown down after an alleged attempted robbery on Chester Road around the time all the kids were coming home from school.

We constantly read about assaults, muggings and murders around the country, but it really hits home when it’s in your neighbourhood.

So it was annoying to read in the Echo that North East police are enduring the deepest budget cuts of any force in the country.

According to figures from the National Audit Office, Northumbria Police has seen its real-term funding slump by a quarter since 2010, the biggest in England.

We also find that where our budget is cut by 25%, the well to do part of England, namely Surrey, only suffered a 11% budget cut.

The Conservatives love to call themselves the party of law and order, obviously that’s just for the people down South.
