New B&M in Sunderland: Huge reaction to store's opening

The opening of a new B&M Bargains store in Sunderland - the biggest in the North East - has got plenty of shoppers on Wearside talking.

Opening in the former B&Q unit in Ryhope Road, it is employing 79 workers, with 15 of those ex-B&Q workers who lost their jobs when it closed the business last November.

Some of the newcomers have been taken on through Ingeus, a Hendon-based organisation which focuses on getting people back into work.

The shop will stock more than 10,000 types of products across 46,553 sq ft, including a garden centre, with departments including food, alcohol toys, electrical goods, home ware, pet products, health and beauty and seasonal ranges. It also has an extensive DIY, decorating and furniture range.

The news provoked huge interest and scores of comments on the Echo's Facebook page.

Jennifer Pearce Skipsey wrote: "I for one think it's a good move as it's re hired 15 of the ex B&Q employees and 64 other people who wanted and were looking to money for their families!!"

Sue Draper wrote: "It's good news puts people in work and it's a great store selling great products we have a small one where we live but this store will bring in folk from all over the city."
