New 20mph zones proposed for roads around Sunderland schools - which streets are covered?
Sunderland City Council published an order this week outlining plans for the next phase of reduced speed zones at 19 city schools.
Cabinet member for environment and transportation, Coun Amy Wilson, said: “As we have seen increases in traffic volumes on our roads, so we have seen more traffic outside our schools.

She added: “There has been research and there is evidence that slower traffic speeds helps reduce the risk of collisions and of any casualties and injuries.
“Having 20mph speed zones also provides extra benefits such as health benefits by helping to increase walking or cycling, and benefits to the community.
“As most schools are in our city’s residential areas, introducing 20mph zones can have very positive benefits for residents at all times of the day, weekends and during school holidays.”

Conservative councillor Peter Wood, of St Michaels ward, questioned why Thornholme Road and Thornhill school had been “left out” of the proposals.
He added police had “limited resources” to tackle speeding and other issues outside schools – including vehicles stopping on zig zag lines and in lay-bys – but that the new 20mph zones would help.
“Parents and carers have a responsibility to be responsible dropping off and picking up children,” he said.

Deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats group, Coun Stephen O’Brien, also raised concerns about speeding around Broadway Junior School in Springwell Road which are not included in the plans.
“It’s a fantastic start but more needs to be done. The only concern is that it doesn’t go far enough,” he said.
The council originally held a programme of 20mph zones in 15 pilot areas with six introduced so far in Silksworth, Marley Potts, Plains Farm, Ford, Leechmere and Hetton.
