They say she was a mother of two who lived in the street for about 15 years.

She hadn’t been at the house in recent months

One resident said: “It was a big shock to hear what happened. She was a really lovely lady.
“She had lived on the street for around 16 years before she moved all of a sudden back in the summer.

“She was a proud grandmother who was always showing neighbours pictures of her grandchildren. We couldn’t believe it when we heard the news.”

On Sunday, emergency services were called to Marsden after concerns were raised over a woman who was on the wrong side of the barriers next to Marsden Grotto.

Police, fire and coastguard services attended and tried to speak to her, but she fell from the cliffs.

She was recovered from the water by Tynemouth RNLI’s crew, along with South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB), before being taken to South Shields ferry landing, where an ambulance was waiting.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, she was pronounced dead.

The death has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPPCS).

Following the news, South Tyneside residents took to Facebook to express their condolences.
