NE Premier League: Worthy five-wicket haul inspires second success for Burnmoor against Sunderland

Kevin Dixon added 21 and Liam Dixon 20 late on to push the score up, against good bowling from Quinton Boatswain (3-41) and Elliot Smith (3-58), while there were two wickets for Jaspreet Singh.

Sunderland only managed 114 all out in reply, with Allan Worthy the bowling hero, taking an excellent haul of 5-30.

Skipper Greg Applegarth made 21 and Chris Youldon 31, but it was not enough for the Ashbrooke outfit, after a promising start last weekend.

Washington made a winning start to their season.

After a first-week bye, Washington outgunned visitors South Shields by 42 runs after losing the toss and being put in to bat.

Batting was never easy, but a crucial, unbeaten 48 from captain Ash Thorpe, with three fours and a six at No 7, helped the Harraton outfit to make 138-9 in 55 overs.

Matthew Corner had two boundaries in 25, while Michael Nunn, on his debut, and last-man Colin Myers both added 14.

Sam Embleton (2-26) and Chris Dorothy (2-27) led Shields’ bowlers, with wickets also for Shea Clements, Oliver Appleby, Michael Dunn and Nabeel Aziz.

Shields looked in contention at 54-2, but five wickets fell for five runs as Washington took command.

Rupesh Borade hit five boundaries in 27 to lead Shields’ batting, backed by 22 from Chris Rainbow and Luke Elliott’s 18. But they were all out for 96 in the 46th over.

Mark Watson bagged 3-31 and Adam Hickey 3-33, with Thorpe (2-5 in 6.1 overs), Scott Latimer (1-14) and Myers (1-1) offering good support.

Castle Eden claimed a dramatic one-wicket victory over visitors Boldon.

Boldon won the toss and opted to bat, making 157 all out in 52.2 overs.

Opener Chris Ellison fired three fours in 20 before Ian Pattison (68, with eight fours) and Nick Sampson-Barnes (36, with a four and three sixes) put on 75 for the third wicket.

Geoff Sargon added 12 before the end came, with Alan Unsworth the pick of the bowlers, grabbing 5-48 in 11 overs.

Jeremy Warner took 4-23 in 13.2 overs, with Keith Bailey (1-12 in nine) also striking.

Castle Eden’s response suffered a huge blow as they were swiftly struggling on 14-4 before Bailey (43, with four fours and two sixes), Philip Wimpenny (23) and James O’Neill’s superb, unbeaten 62, with nine fours and two sixes, turned the game around.

Despite a couple of scares, O’Neill saw the newly-promoted hosts home on 160-9 in the 45th over.

Phil Shakespeare snaffled 5-33 in 15 overs, while Gary Scott took 2-41 and Anthony Brown 1-25.

Brandon were six-wicket winners at home to Gateshead Fell to go second in the table

Fell reached 157-9 in 55 overs, led by Malik Javed’s unbeaten 38, with six boundaries), Thomas Pinkney (31), Richard Smith (23) and Stephen Devenport (19).

Durham’s Ryan Pringle plundered 3-43 for Brandon, backed by Oscar Dewhurst (2-29) and Gordon Muchall (2-20).

Brandon slumped to 14-2, but Muchall hit six fours and two sixes in a 76-ball, undefeated 64, backed by Pringle (48, with seven boundaries) and Nathan Adamson (22no) to see them home.

Burnopfield went top of the league, following a 46-run win at Willington.

Cole Pearce made 56 and John Oswell 62 in Burnopfield’s total of 210-9, with Steven Alderson taking 4-53 and Jake Louth 3-35.

Neil Killeen (4-25) and Callum Thorpe (3-32) did the damage with the ball, with only James Stock (58) and Max Bailey (30) offering real resistance as Willington were all out for 164.
