Move truly embarrasses

The argument of Councillor Kelly on television that the movement of the central library to the museum is simply to return it where it came from in 1995 is really very astute.

In fact, the same argument could equally be applied to the decay and reduction of all council services ie “We are simply returning to where we were 20 years ago...”

It would, of course, have been better, if Councillor Kelly had been honest and blamed the impact of Government policies and the knock-on effect of the failure of the Children’s Services Department.

Equally, it would have been far more acceptable if the Labour group had been given a free vote on the affair rather than being whipped into supporting a move which so many of them disagreed with.

That a city with the aspiration to be a City of Culture should be squeezing the central library into two back rooms, which were purpose-designed for other public uses, is truly embarrassing.

The entire heritage and culture strategy of the city ought to be revisited in view of what is degenerating into a hand-to-mouth debacle.
