The Owls agreed a deal with Boro on Tuesday which saw the striker go to the Sky Bet Championship club until the end of the season, with the move later becoming permanent for an undisclosed fee - reported to be worth up to £10million.

All the parties involved had to play a waiting game to find out whether the paperwork had gone through before the 11pm deadline.

An EFL spokesman said: "The EFL is now satisfied that the relevant documents in relation to the transfer of Jordan Rhodes from Middlesbrough to Sheffield Wednesday were sent prior to the expiry of the deadline, thereby allowing the EFL to accept the registration and the transfer of the player."
