Sunderland Swim School is behind the mermaid lessons which will teach young people how to master the art of being a mermaid – from learning the ultimate tail swish, to holding their breath and perfecting under-water routines.

School directors Mark McNichol and Kim Cain said the aim of the classes is to encourage more youngsters in the community to learn the essential skills of swimming, all while having fun.

Mark said: “The mermaid lessons have proven a great success so far – they really are a brilliant way of encouraging youngsters into the pool.

“Despite claims on social media, 'mermaiding' is totally safe, especially when using professional companies such as ours where staff are highly trained and insured.

“Of course, learning to be a mermaid is a lot of fun and the children are always eager to pop on their colourful mermaid tails and decorate their faces with glitter – but at the same time, they’re also learning key skills.

“The classes teach pupils how to safely enter and exit the water, hold their breath and perform basic routines, as well as improving general confidence around water.

As well offering a magical mermaid experience, in at the deep end also provides RLSS Rookie lifeguard classes for people of all ages to learn essential lifesaving skills.

Mark said: “Above all, we’re providing classes that are flexible, affordable and fun and of course safe! in at the deep end is going from strength to strength, and we’re excited about what the future holds for us.

"We’d love to continue to take on more eager-swimmers and expand the businesses across the region.”
