Memories are not all rosie

Recently there have been a few obituaries on the Letter Page. Some people wrote in about David Bowie. All I remember is he came to Roker Park and greeted us with: Hello, Newcastle!

Someone even wrote in praising Jimmy Hill. Sunderland supporters with long memories won’t agree with that. We recall the evening in 1977 when we were relegated because of the nonsense at the Coventry City match.

Then there’s Terry Wogan. Let me remind everyone of his ‘mean streets of Sunderland’ jibe. He could have chosen anywhere to make his point, but he picked on our home town.

Now that Lord Lucan is officially dead, it’s hard to find any local connection. But I can now reveal that for 40 years he used to sleep rough in Mowbray Park ...
