Man who appeared to be under influence of drugs brought to safety following police incident

A man, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, was taken to hospital after he was brought to safety following an incident in a Houghton street.

Officers were first called to reports of a man in distress in North View Terrace, Houghton, and witnesses say the road was cordoned off while police negotiated with the man.

Officers believed the man appeared under the influence of drugs and was taken to hospital as a precaution following the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 5.15pm yesterday (Tuesday) we were called to an address on North View Terrace, Houghton, after receiving a report of a man who was in distress.

“Officers negotiated with the man in question, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs. He was subsequently brought to safety and was taken to hospital as a precaution.”
