Man in hospital after attack near munitions factory

Police were called at 5pm yesterday after the alleged victim was attacked by another man in Birtley Road in Rickleton, Washington, near the BAE Systems factory in the Wear Industrial Estate.

The 58-year-old man is being treated in hospital for what officers say is a serious but not life-threatening injury.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "It is believed the offender had been parked in Birtley Road before the assault happened and police are keen to speak to anyone who saw a dark coloured Ford Fiesta motor vehicle in the area at that time.

"A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is still in police custody."
