Man charged with attempted murder after 15-year-old is shot in head in Sunderland

A man has been charged with attempted murder after the shooting of a 15-year-old boy in a Sunderland street.

Steven Thompson, 39, who lives on Hewitt Avenue, has also been charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of a firearm and perverting the course of justice.

A 16-year-old boy, who lives in the Sunderland area but cannot be identified for legal reasons, has been charged with possession of a firearm and perverting the course of justice.

Police were called to Hewitt Avenue at 8.40pm Wednesday after the 15-year-old was shot in the head while riding pillion on a motorbike.

He suffered a serious injury and was taken to Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary where he remains in a critical condition.

Thompson and the 16-year-old have been remanded in custody and will appear at South Tyneside Magistrates Court' this morning.

The rider of the motorbike was not injured in the incident

Police said the investigation into the shooting continues and extra patrols will remain in the area to reassure any concerned members of the public.
