Eight people have been rescued by firefighters and six taken to hospital for treatment after a fire broke out in the roof of a Sunderland care home.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service sent six appliances and two command units to battle the blaze, which broke out at the Croft Care Home in Ettrick Grove in the Barnes area of the city on Friday, June 26.

It has since issued an update to say eight people were helped from the home, with the North East Ambulance Service taking six people to hospital for treatment.

Thirty people were inside the building at the time the fire was first reported.

The blaze has been brought under control, but the crews expect to be on site for some time until it is clear the fire is fully out.
