Nancy Mowbray is a great-great-grandmother after the birth of William Derek Allen, who is the son of her great-grandaughter Emma Louise Fish, 24.

William was nearly born in an ambulance after a quick labour, but was delivered at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Nancy’s daughter and Emma’s great-grandmother, Patricia Hylton, 60, of Philadelphia, Houghton, mum to Emma Louise’s mum Jayne Hutchinson, 43, said: “This is the only area of our family that now covers five generations.

“My mam’s 83 now and we might end up reaching another generation in the future. You never know.”

Born in Hetton and raised in Grasswell, Nancy, a former clothing factory worker who was also a skilled seamstress, moved to Shiney Row about half a century ago.

Her husband Kenneth died about 14 years ago.

As well as William, Nancy is a great-grandmother of six and a grandmother of five.

“We’re a close family and usually hire a villa to go away to every year,” added Patricia.

“Unfortunately, my mam has to have surgery on her knee so she couldn’t with us, but apart from her problems with arthritis, she’s well.”
