A QUICK THINKING toddler who rang 999 after his mother collapsed has met the officer who took his call.

Three-year-old Oliver Embleton was just two when mother Nicola collapsed at home in Ellerby Mews in Thornley from low blood pressure.

But he remembered what she had taught him and rang the police, saying “Mummy fell down”, and then stayed on the phone for 20 minutes until emergency services arrived.

Today, he visited Durham Constabulary’s headquarters to meet call handler Michael Walton, who spoke to him when he rang, with Ms Embleton thanking him for what he did.

Ms Embleton said: “It’s amazing, I can’t imagine what went through his little head but he managed.

“And the police staff were amazing - they kept him on the phone for a good 20 minutes.

“I taught him and his sister to call 999, but he was just two and I didn’t think he would manage.

“On the day I was none the wiser that anything was wrong until I came to and saw Oliver chatting away on the phone.

“So I took the phone and the person down the line said it was the police and at that point I realised Oliver had made the call.”

Mr Walton has since won an award for how he handled the call.
