Letter of the week: Sunderland should be proud to see a Mackem on TV's University Challenge

Once again the Liberal Democrats are trying to smear other councillors.

This time it is the Conservative Councillor in St Chads, William Blackett.

They accuse him of being an absent councillor because he appeared for York University on University Challenge (Echo, September 5). The Lib Dem Candidate for Silksworth in the local elections Thomas Crawford is also a York student.

Would they have classed him as an absent councillor if he had won? I doubt it.

We should be proud to see a Mackem on the programme. At least the educated Coun Blackett attends his committees.

Last week's Letter of the week: "What classic buildings does Sunderland have?"They also said that Conservatives have not been in touch in St Chad’s since the local election which is a lie as I have the latest leaflet in front of me.

They should get on with the real issues and stop their relentless quest to become the largest opposition party through skulduggery, especially in wards where they do not even try to win the vote. This is low level scum politics not worthy of my or any other person's vote.

It is obvious hypocrisy is still alive and kicking in the Lib Dems.
