Saucy Burger is set to open at the end of April in the Dr Feelgood site in Hylton Riverside.

The tapas restaurant, which opened in 2013, will continue to operate for the time being but will be transformed into Saucy Burger in time for a series of VIP opening nights beginning on April 21.

A number of gourmet burger chains have opened across the country in recent years, but this is the first time the city will have a sit-down restaurant focused on the trend.

Apartment Group, who own the restaurant, say they decided to open Saucy Burger after noticing how popular burgers were at their other Sunderland business, Liberty Brown, which will continue to run downstairs on the retail park site.

Donna Cope, group operations manager, said: “There’s been smokehouses open in Sunderland, but we wanted to do something different. We’ll be offering some weird and wonderful versions of burgers. Some favourites from Feelgood will remain, but primarily it’s burgers.”

The restaurant and bar, which is creating 10-15 jobs, is the latest addition to the Apartment Group portfolio, which already has a string of successful venues including As You Like It in Jesmond; Florita’s in Newcastle city centre and Newton Hall in Northumberland.
