Learn new skills on Wearside today

The City Library and Arts Centre in Fawcett Street is today playing host to a series of taster sessions.

The Learning Day, which runs until 3pm, offers information about a huge range of courses available closer to home at community venues across the city.

​Specialist training providers will be available throughout the day to provide information and advice about the learning opportunities available to develop personal, vocational and creative skills and talents.

Information and taster sessions will be available including everything from first aid and food safety to construction and cake decorating to help people improve their individual employability, education and enjoyability of free-time and leisure activities.

Sunderland City Council Portfolio Holder for Responsive Services and Customer Care, Councillor Cecilia Gofton, said: "We are holding a Learning Day to help raise awareness of the huge range of learning opportunities available at community venues across our city.

​"People have the chance to learn new skills, develop existing ones and discover new talents and interests with help of the tutors and resources that we have available.

​"There is literally something for everyone, from job seekers and those seeking accredited training to people wanting to learn sewing, ceramics or cake decoration."

Councillor Gofton added: "Our Family, Adult and Community Learning (FACL) programme is available and accessible to adults and their families with varying abilities and aptitudes, and we hope people will come along to the Learning Day to find out more."
