Learn how to protect yourself from fraud at Sunderland police event

Police are set to host a community event in Sunderland to help people protect themselves against fraudsters.

Staff from Northumbria Police's Crime Prevention Team will be at Morrisons Store in Whitburn Road, in Seaburn on Friday, June 24, between 10am and 2pm to offer tips about staying safe online.

They will be joined by staff from Barclays Digital Eagles from Barclays Bank to promote online safety.

Officers will be available for advice on a host of issues including banking fraud and scams, spotting fake emails, buying safely online, rogue traders and postal fraud.

They will also discuss doorstep crime prevention including courier fraud, distraction burglary and cold calling.

Sunderland North Neighbourhood Inspector Don Wade said: "This is a great opportunity for people to learn more about how to stay safe when it comes to banking and online fraud.

"It only takes a few simple steps to stay safe online and prevent fraudsters from being able access your bank accounts and personal details.

"Our crime prevention advisor will be on hand to answer any questions about deterring opportunist thieves and how to lower the risk of falling victim to crime.

"If anyone does think money has gone missing from their account unlawfully they should contact their bank immediately so they can close the account and prevent the risk of any further fraudulent activity."
