Lauren Laverne wants your memories for the People's History of Pop

Sunderland-born radio DJ Lauren Laverne will front a special show this weekend as part of a series called the People's History of Pop.

The programme will air on BBC Newcastle on Sunday at midday.

It features a Tyneside woman who has Spice Girl Geri Halliwell’s personalised car registration plate, a man from Gateshead who has a bathroom themed around the American rock band Kiss, and a Wearside woman who blew her student loan to go to New York to see the Maccabees play live.

The show will also include a tale from the 1970s when New York punks The Ramones called at a Newcastle post office for milk and cookies.

The People’s History of Pop celebrates pop history through the eyes of dedicated fans and includes a four-part series to be broadcast on BBC Four this spring.

The series is appealing to music fans around the UK for their most precious, personal and rarest music memorabilia and will celebrate the best stories on radio and TV.

It will tell the story of popular music through the eyes and ears of the fans and musicians who were there and gather stories through their souvenirs.

Managing Editor of BBC Newcastle Doug Morris said: “I think we have a fascinating line-up for People’s History of Pop, as we’ve come across some amazing stories.

"This is a chance for music fans to tell their stories from the '50s to the '00s, as well as to celebrate the best music from the decades.

"We’re also appealing to listeners to get in touch with their stories and memorabilia.”

In partnership with Historypin (the user-generated digital archive of historical artefacts), music fans of all ages are being asked to upload photos, videos and audio of their rock and pop music memorabilia, performances and artefacts, with stories attached, to bbc.co.uk/peoplespop.

This material will create a unique online archive that brings together the UK’s musical history.

The series is looking for photos, badges, ticket stubs, fan club materials, gig programmes, annuals, teen diary entries, teen band recordings, wrist bands, rare footage, which will shape and define the TV series.

Contributors who have submitted the most surprising, moving and rare material may be filmed to appear in the programme.

People's History of Pop is a part of an umbrella season, BBC Music: My Generation, a year-long landmark season of music programming charting the decades from mid '50s to mid '90s. A four-part TV programme will also air on BBC Four from spring.
