Key Sunderland defender signs lucrative new four-year contract

Patrick van Aanholt has agreed a new Sunderland contract which will keep him at the Stadium of Light until 2020.

Van Aanholt was arguably Sunderland's most improved player after Sam Allardyce's arrival at the club last October, with the 25-year-old putting his error-prone displays at the start of the season firmly behind him.

The ex-Chelsea man netted four goals en route to Sunderland's survival, plus forced his way back into the Holland squad in the process.

That form had alerted the likes of Crystal Palace to van Aanholt, with only two years left to run on his previous contract.

But Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce has moved to tie van Aanholt down to a lucrative new contract which will see him remain with the Black Cats for the next four years.

“Patrick was an outstanding performer last season, contributing not only solid defensive performances, but also assists and vital goals," said Allardyce.

“It is fantastic to be able to secure the long-term services of such a talented footballer and athlete, who will hopefully continue to improve here for many years to come.”
