'Intoxicated' man taken to hospital after fall on rock at Marsden cliffs

Emergency services were called to the cliffs at Marsden Grotto at 5.30am on Thursday, November 5, to reports a man had fallen from the cliffs.

Sunderland Coastguard and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade discovered an ‘intoxicated casualty’ who had fallen on a rock.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution by the North East Ambulance Service.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 5.48am today (Thursday) we received a report of concern for the welfare of a man off the Coast Road, South Shields.

“Officers attended and located the man who had suffered a minor fall. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.”

Sunderland Coastguard added: “On arrival the incident was not as first suspected, a intoxicated casualty was located on the beach having fallen on a rock, working with the ambulance service, they were walked off the beach to the cliff top and handed into police and ambulance care.”
