Last year was the first year of the TCL Christmas Shop at Thoburn’s in Hendon after the two local businesses joined forces to create a Scrooge-free shopping experience.

It proved so successful that they’ve teamed up once more for 2026, with a bigger and better offering.

TCL specialise in commercial fit outs and residential interior design, with Christmas being their busiest time of year, decorating homes as well as businesses such as Port of Call, Gatsby and Sheepfolds Stables.

They start preparing for the festivities in spring, visiting trade shows and collecting ideas, and the shop is a chance for people to browse thousands of decorations, such as baubles priced from £2 , giant polar bears, garlands, nutcrackers, snow globes, wreathes and much more.

You can even buy Christmas tree kits, priced from £199, which include everything you need to decorate an average-sized tree.

TCL owner Julie Barnes, who used to run the Christmas shop at the TCL warehouse in Cold Hesledon, near Seaham, said: “Last year was the most successful Christmas shop we’ve done and really popular, so we’ve made it even bigger and better, with new additions such as the Christmas tree kits.

“Also new this year is a space where you can sit down with a Christmas designer so you can order your bespoke garlands and talk through decorations.

“Moving the shop here from our previous shop in Seaham is great because it gives us the height and space to create better displays. We put so much time and effort into bringing something different to Sunderland. There’s lots of things here you won’t find anywhere else.”

The team has spent the past six weeks transforming the large garden centre in Wear Street, which still has non-seasonal decorations at the back of the site.

There’s various themes across the rooms, including Luxury Nordic, Cinderella, Chanel, a Ralph Lauren-style traditional Christmas style and more.

You can also visit the on site Frosty’s cafe, with its own igloo seating, with hot chocolates and sweet treats available to buy.

Thoburn’s, meanwhile, specialises in real trees and wreathes, with its potted real trees arriving next week and 600 cut Nordmann trees arriving mid-November.

Garden centre owner Lynsey Thoburn said: “Last year was great, it was something different for my existing customers and also brought new people to the shop.

“I already have customers in the Lake District and they travelled all that way to come to the shop. It’s great to have the TCL girls here for the Christmas period, too.”

*TCL Christmas Shop opens officially from Friday, October 16 and will be open daily from 10am to 4pm.
