Increased police patrols after spate of car fire arson attacks in Sunderland

Emergency services attended two car fires in Hollycarrside, Sunderland at the end of last week; both are being treated as arson.

These followed a separate incident in Town End Farm, which saw two people set a Mercedes Benz alight in an unprovoked attack.

Steve Burdis, Group Manager at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has condemned the dangerous acts.

In a statement, he said: “Recently, we have seen an increase in car fires across Sunderland.

“All fires put people at risk, but car fires can be particularly dangerous for both crews and members of the public – depending on the type of vehicle, they can react differently to fire and it’s easy for the flames to spread to nearby vehicles or buildings.

“We’d urge anyone who discovers a fire to avoid putting themselves in any danger, dial 999 and request the fire service.”

A Northumbria Police spokesman confirmed the details of the Hollycarrside incidents to the Echo.

They took place on Thursday, February 20 in Langhurst shortly after 7pm and Friday, February 21 in Ralph Avenue at around 2am.

Nobody was injured in either of the fires and investigations are ongoing.

Northumbria Police Inspector Jamie Southwell warned that those responsible face harsh action and pledged that officers would carry out increased patrols in the city in response to the crimes.

He added: “We are aware of a number of car fires in the Hollycarrside area of Sunderland over the last few days and investigations are ongoing into each report.

“This type of criminality is totally unacceptable and anybody found to have been involved will be dealt with robustly.

“Increased patrols are being carried out in the area and anyone with concerns is asked to speak to an officer or ring 101.”
