She was on Beatrice Terrace, near Mount Pleasant Lake, when she saw a cup holder lying in the street next to four cars parked in the dead end.

When the dog walker passed again, more waste from McDonalds was thrown into the street, leading her to politely ask the two young women in the car to take it away.

After they swore at her, a girl from another car struck her, before other females joined in as young men held her and shouted encouragement to her attackers.

Punches were landed to her face, back and head, leaving her badly shaken with bruising and lumps.

The ordeal was brought to an end when women who live close by stepped in, with the thugs then driving off.

The woman was treated by paramedics and she was later checked at hospital.

Police believe up to 10 people were involved in the “senseless assault” at around 8.50pm on Tuesday.

The woman’s 52-year-old husband, who have asked the couple are not identified, told the Echo: “I’m proud of her response, but I wish this hadn’t happened to her.

“She was shouting and screaming for help. Three women came out of their houses and stopped it.

“One of them called an ambulance and the crew were fantastic.

“The whole thing escalated so quickly, from a girl punching her to them all becoming involved.

“It’s thug mentality.

“We want to say a heartfelt thank you to those people who helped her. They had the courage to come out.

“They’ve been round to give their sympathies and flowers.”

Among the cars parked up are thought to have been a Toyota Aygo or Citroen C1 and a Vauxhall Corsa.
